Making The Smallest Part of Your Home, The Best Part of Your Home

In the often overlooked corners and small, awkward spaces of a home lie hidden gems waiting to be transformed into cozy retreats and intimate nooks. These neglected areas, often dismissed as too challenging to utilize, can actually become the most cherished and inviting spots in your living space. Embracing the uniqueness of these corners allows for creative design solutions that turn what was once an awkward space into a haven of comfort and charm.

Consider this unused corner of our Carlsbad Residence interior design project as a case study into how to transform a non-functioning space into something not only functional, but inviting and beautiful.

This tucked-away corner adjacent to the staircase and loft, sits raised 30” from the ground to allow for the ceiling height of a mid-level powder bath.  With its elevation change and tight quarters, one might deem it too small and unreasonable for practical use.  However, we had a vision for this little space right from the start.

Our client acquired this vacation home with the purpose of creating lasting memories with family and friends before their kids embark on their college journeys in a couple of years.  Keeping this objective in mind, we adopted the motto "the more, the merrier” when designing.  The elevated corner of the space was transformed into a versatile area, serving as a reading nook and lounge during the day and converting into a comfortable bed at night.

We worked with a local upholsterer to create a custom 6-inch cushion, complete with a stain-resistant removable cover for added convenience.  To enhance the coziness, we piled on pillows and installed battery-operated sconces since there was no power outlet in close proximity.  These thoughtful additions not only catered to the family's needs of more sleeping arrangements for guests, but also contributed to the overall value of their home. The 2,300 square foot residence now boasts a favorite space that has become cherished by both the homeowners and their guests.
